Gone Fishing: 12 Tips for Baiting & Tackling Like the Pros

When we think of meditation, it is often associated with sitting cross-legged on a yoga mat and repeating “om” over and over again, but there are many ways to clear your mind. Fishing is considered a very relaxing and meditative experience that can build your patience, concentration, and mental health.

The thought of indulging by the water is a staple pastime deeply ingrained in our culture, but the hesitation to get out there is still present for those who do not fish regularly. Many people are held back due to a lack of specialized knowledge and fishing experience.

We’re here with some tips for baiting and tackling like a pro to eliminate this roadblock.

Learn To Cast Like An Expert

Casting a rod is the first thing to learn when trying to fish for the first time. Poor casting leads to lost lures and missed chances. There are two types of rods to get used to, the casting rod and spinning rod.

Always place the bait within a few feet of the strike zone. Don’t move suddenly if you’re using plastic baits like crawls or worms. It’s important to differentiate between a bite and a snag, so the bait doesn’t move from the strike zone. Check pulsation and hold the rod steadily to know if it’s a bite or not.

        Use Cheap Lures

As you are starting out, don’t use rigs or lures you’re afraid of losing. Start with cheaper baits while you get used to the process as well as the different fish in the area. A lot of times, cheap lures can actually work better on those pesky swimmers – depending on the zone. Once you get a hang of the system, you can start using more sophisticated lures.

        Confidence Makes it Worthwhile

Confidence takes your fishing experience to the next level. While fishing, you must be sure of every cast you throw; use mind over matter. Just like any sport, a pro’s success comes from their mental fortitude. Always have faith you’re about to catch that coveted five-pounder in your next cast.

        Learn Your Lures

If you’re using a new lure, it may take some time to get the hang of it and gain confidence. To maximize your fishing success rate and enhance your experience, it is advisable to go fishing with the same lure over and over again. This allows you to learn the bait and how to work it for fishing.

        Use a Kayak

Are you a new fisherman wanting to get out on the water but don’t have a boat? Fret not, as you can always try kayak fishing. Lightweight, affordable and portable, kayaks allow you to get into areas inaccessible by motorboat.

The best part is that these areas hold some of the biggest fish! Because of how lightweight the boat is, you can simply strap the kayak to your car and take it home. When you store it away, make sure to keep it covered with custom covers.

        Saltwater vs. Freshwater

There are apparent differences between saltwater and freshwater fishing. Freshwater fishing is done in lakes and rivers, while saltwater fishing is done in the ocean. There are different species of fish depending on the kind of water you fish in, which means there will be different methods of catching them.

Select The Right Sized Fishing Gear

Appropriately sized fishing gear makes all the difference. Never try to get one-size-fits-all reels and rods. Your 12-pound-class casting reel for bass isn’t suitable for tossing spinners and tiny jigs, while the four-pound-class is perfect for casting micro-jigs. Instead of trying to make do, get gear that is sized exclusively for the species you are targeting.

        Trolling

Hold the lures next to the boat before deploying the lines when trolling. Watch them to ensure your bait is swimming realistically. Speed up the boat if it seems lethargic. Conversely, reduce your speed if it looks too energetic. This ensures you don’t throw a lure that is damaged, fouled, or not swimming properly.

        Sharp Hooks

Remember to sharpen your old hooks and use new hooks whenever necessary. Many people go fishing with dull and old hooks, but even though it is still possible to catch a fish, the chances drastically go down. A neat, sharp hook lets you catch the fish without causing too much damage to the mouth. Use a clamp and a file to sharpen your hooks.

        Choose The Right Bait Color

With seasonal changes, switching your bait’s color is a great idea. When the water is crystal clear in winter and autumn, you can use a bright bait color. If the water is colored, the scent plays a more significant role than color. You can choose baits like hard or soft pellets.

        Find The Right Temperature

Every species of fish likes a specific temperature. Their environmental conditions help them regulate this temperature. Fish like to move in shallow or deep waters depending on which temperature they are most comfortable in. If you know the temperature preferences of the fish you’d like to catch, you may land the big one.

        Have Patience

Fishing in spots where there are large quantities of potential catches is what most people try for, but knowing exactly where the fish are located is easier in theory. Although everyone wants to catch the biggest beast in the water, don’t let the anticipation mess with your head. Just be patient and prepared to change the hook, knots, weights, lures, and fishing technique.

Rest easy in a sturdy chair, equipped with a water resistant chair cover. Remember that sometimes it is the waiting that is the true beauty of the sport.
